Years ago, FromSoftware launched a game called Demon Souls, and it created a very niche fanbase for itself. The game’s core gameplay loop was a mix of those roguelike games and a very elaborate role-playing game. Years later, they launched Dark Souls, a spiritual successor to Demon Souls, and it took the gaming crowd by fire!

The effect of the Souls-like genre is not hidden from anyone. People understand how these games work, and people love pushing through these hard levels. Many developers took inspiration from those games and came up with their own twists on them. One such developer is Deck 13. Over the years, they have developed several soul-like games. Some of them were downright bad, while others were pretty good.

This developer is now coming back with yet another title called Lords of the Fallen, a reimagining of their own game that was not so successful.

Let’s find out everything this game takes from FromSoftware’s games and everything it does on its own.

A semi-open-world game

It is no surprise to the fans of Dark Souls games that The Lords of the Fallen is a game with levels that are semi-open-world in nature. Who would not remember the level design that Dark Souls introduced? Go anywhere, do anything, and deal with the bosses and enemies in any sequence you want.

All these things made that game a marvel of level design and player freedom. Sometimes even the most open-world games do not allow such freedom; players are bound to a linear path that they must follow to advance in the story. In Dark Souls and the games that followed, players always had options.

The Lords of the Fallen is such a game that gives its players a similar option. Go anywhere, do anything, and tackle any boss in any way you want.

Seamless Co-Op play

This is something no one ever expected to see in a soul-like game. Seamless co-op is something fans of Dark Souls can only dream of. Those games always have a way of complicating things when it comes to letting their players defeat some bosses with their friends.

And let’s be honest here, playing these games with a friend is a different kind of experience altogether. Dying in the hands of those hard bosses is indeed fun, but dying alongside a friend just accelerates the experience.

So be prepared to face the horrors of The Lords of the Fallen with a friend, and be prepared for the punishing boss fights that await you.

Flawless Combat

There has never been a complaint regarding the combat in any Souls game. Even though Bloodborne has the best combat mechanics of them all, Dark Souls games were never much behind. Taking a cue from those titles, The Lords of the Fallen would have this fluidity in its combat.

The previous Lords of the Fallen were not very fluid; in fact, it felt a bit clunky to play. Deck 13 improved this problem in their later games, such as Surge 2. Now they are taking it a step further with the excellent combat mechanics of The Lords of the Fallen.

A weird second chance

One thing that this game does not borrow from Dark Souls or Bloodborne is the Umbral. It’s basically the Lords of the Fallen’s version of the realm of the dead. When players die, they get the option to revive themselves, just like in Sekiro.

But they are revived in the realm of the dead; they now have the option to fight the enemy that just killed them, or they can simply hightail it and come back later with better preparation.

Lastly, the visuals of the game are just outstanding; it looks so good that it almost makes us wish FromSoftware started making such beautiful games. In terms of visuals, it’s more comparable to the recent Demon Souls remake, and it even supports 60 FPS mode.

If any Dark Souls veteran is on the fence about this game, they should simply cross their fingers and give it a go when it launches in October. And let’s hope Deck 13 is now working on their own version of Elden Ring next; that would be an interesting experience to have.
