Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Coin Guide: How can we unlock everything?

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is an upgrade over its Wii U brethren in the sense that almost everything the player could desire is unlocked right from the start. However, players who like to grind for their achievements need not feel disheartened as there’s just enough in MK 8 Deluxe to strike their fancy.

The name of the game is coins. Players can find them scattered across each track, just waiting to be grabbed as you are cruising along the course. You would need these for everything from unlocking kart parts to gaining a significant advantage over our rivals. So buckle up and take notes.

How can I earn Coins in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe?

Earning coins in Mario Kart can be as simple as being a little more careful as you’re blasting along the tracks. While making sure your friends eat your dust is important, collecting those spinning metal discs laid across each level can be extremely beneficial. For one, each coin you collect adds a slight speed boost to your overall momentum, as reported by Polygon. And for two, you need them to unlock better parts.

However, while players can collect them in the usual fashion by drifting along the track, there are better ways. For folks that don’t want to go through the hassle of meticulously collecting coin after coin, Nintendo Life has a simple method.

They call this technique ‘smart farming’. It involves playing the multiplayer game mode with a medium-weight character like Luigi and exploiting the smart-steering and auto-acceleration features to let the game do the work for you. By following the exact race setting as described in the attached video, players can average around 9.8 coins per race in Moo Moo Meadows.

But fans willing to get more involved have access to an even faster way. By following GameXplain’s method, they could collect 10 coins in merely 20 seconds!

This is a lot more involved than the previous method but could net you similar results but significantly faster. Follow every step and you could unlock new parts in no time!

Unlocking Karts and its Parts

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe offers its players the option to customize their vehicle with various parts rather than offer specific kart builds. Players have the freedom to choose in three categories- body, wheels, and a glider.

New variations of these parts are unlocked as the player collects more coins. However, rather than offering an in-game shop to spend these coins, as GameRant notes, parts are unlocked randomly when the player achieves a certain coin milestone.

For instance, initially, parts unlock for every 30 coins collected. But soon that number increases to 50 coins once the player reaches the 450 coins milestone.

Upon reaching the 1500 coins milestone, players receive new parts for every 100 coins they gather.

As per Eurogamer, MK8 Deluxe offers 28 karts, 17 bikes, 21 wheels, and 14 gliders for players to unlock.

Unlocking Characters

One of the best parts about MK 8 Deluxe is its free DLC. Essentially, players have access to the entire roster of Mario Kart 8, including the DLC characters right from the start!

Be it King Boo, Dry Bones, or even the Inklings, players can simply select their favorite character and blaze onto the tracks. However, players can unlock fresh costumes for the Miis by scanning the corresponding Amiibo figure on their controller. But there is one character that players can only unlock through skill alone, Gold Mario.

Unlocking Tracks

In a game like Mario Kart, the tracks are one of the most important aspects of the game. These charming courses are more than just a set dressing, as they make the game come alive with an exhilarating atmosphere and obstacles. Like the characters, all tracks in MK 8 Deluxe come unlocked from the start.

However, with the latest Booster Course Pass, Nintendo has doubled the existing 48 tracks with an additional 48 courses to be added to the game through 2023.

Unlocking Gold Mario, Gold Glider

Having Gold Mario in your roster is a show of pure skill. Being the only character players need to unlock in the game, one requires equal parts technique and patience to bring the gold plumber home. The requirements are straightforward: win a Gold Trophy in every Grand Prix Cup at 200cc.

While it sounds easy, 200cc is the fastest engine class and your AI opponents are no slouch. But if you can achieve that feat, the Gold Mario skin is yours for the taking. We say skin because ‘Gold Mario’ is just a re-skin of Metal Mario with no stat changes.

Getting the Gold Glider is much easier. Simply rack up 5000 coins and you’ll be rewarded with the glorious vehicle part.

What Upgrades Can You Make With Coins?

In conclusion, if you can rack up 5000 coins in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, you can unlock the part hidden behind the biggest coin wall. Using the plethora of vehicle parts at your disposal, you can craft the perfect kart. While there is no one-size-fits-all in video games, you can arrive at the right balance of speed, acceleration, weight, handling, and traction for your preference.

Additionally, even after unlocking all of your favorite options, coins provide a tempting benefit. One can continue to build up speed with each coin you pick up. Although this effect maxes out at 10 coins, an optimized vehicle with all the parts unlocked along with the speed boost would be a force to be reckoned with.

So fasten your seatbelts and blaze along the track, but remember to collect each coin in your way this time.
