Karl-Anthony Towns is having an understated but strong season so far. Talking about understated, the All-Star has a notable track record when it comes to video games. While any dedicated follower knows the Dominican-American player has a love affair with Call of Duty, he also has quite a retro gaming pedigree. But sadly, this is one aspect of his personality that never sees the light of day.

However, fans can deep-dive into Towns’ love for retro video games in this 2017 DraftKings video. This blast from the past showcases the athlete in a completely new form, nerding out over various titles and sharing his experiences with the fans.

 Karl-Anthony Towns is quite a retro gaming aficionado

The video starts with Karl revealing to the audience that playing video games is his favorite hobby. Thus, his interests have brought him to ‘VideoGamesNewYork’, a retro and Japanese video game boutique. As he correctly remarks upon entering the store, there’s a lot of games here! The selection runs the gamut from Sega Genesis to the original Xbox and more.

“I’m can name games and games, I’m seeing all these games [and it] is bringing back nostalgia”

He reveals Sonic was the world to him, back in the blue blur’s golden days. Significantly, he names Sonic 1 and 2 as some of the titles he has played in his lifetime.

As he browses around, he comes across titles like Kingdom Hearts, Pokemon, and Dynasty Warriors. All of which occupy a special place in his heart. But he reveals an endearing memory involving his mother when it came to the seminal Genesis classic, Streets of Rage.

This massively popular arcade-style beat-em-up brings back a wave of nostalgia for most gamers. And Towns is no different.

“Streets of Rage was big with me,” he said. “Me and my mom used to play that almost every other day when we get a chance. We never beat it. You had to get it in one shot, there’s no continues, there’s no more quarters. We got to the end twice in our lives and we lost. So my mom let me down.”

Karl’s charming personality is on full display during the video. It was refreshing to see the athlete reminisce about the good old days while giving fans an intimate look into his childhood.
