It is not unusual for a video game to inspire a developer to come up with an idea for a new game. That is how ideas work. They come from unthinkable places. But it is sort of unusual for a Tiger Woods golf game to help developers of The Lord of the Rings with its development.

It appears that is exactly what happened according to game director, producer, and game artist Glen Schofield.
The Callisto Protocol’s director turned Tiger Woods Golf engine into The Lord of the Rings
Glen Schofield, who worked as a producer on The Lord of the Rings, explained that they actually used Tiger Woods’ Golf engine as their base for the fantasy role-playing title. Both games were released very close to each other.

He said that both games actually shared the nature-level design. He said, “Lord of the Rings is about large areas, and sort of castle in the end, or something, a fortress. What’s like that? Tiger Woods… Long areas and at the end is where you get food when you are done… and so we took the Tiger Woods engine and turned that into a Lord of the Rings engine.”
It’s a very interesting insight into the process of game-making. He made this comment to explain to a fan who asked why his company went and used Unreal Engine for his new game and did not develop their own engine. He simply answered, “My teams have made plenty of engines, and they are hard. They take years and years, especially nowadays, you need to take an old engine and re-work it, but making an engine from scratch in today’s market is going to take you years and millions of dollars, and you will still get it wrong.”
Glen Schofield’s latest game, The Callisto protocol released recently to mixed positive reviews from the press and gamers. They are currently working on fixing the issues gamers are facing with the game.
