The creators of the movie Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath decided to take a different route with the adaptation. They claimed Pratt’s filmography motivated them to approach him to be the new voice actor for this iconic Nintendo character. “For us, it made total sense,” the director reported to Total Film magazine (by GamesRadar). “He’s really good at playing a blue-collar hero with a ton of heart. For the way that Mario is characterized in our film, he’s perfect for it,” he added.

Additionally, the directors want to tell an origin tale of this iconic video game character. They wanted to present the journey of Mario becoming Super Mario. This decision also had a huge impact on them going for Pratt over the classic Italian taste in Mario’s voice. Despite this major change, both directors promised to provide a “Super Mario experience” similar to the Nintendo games.
