Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption is a brilliant game. Although often overshadowed by its successor, the first title isn’t in any way lesser. Red Dead Redemption started a franchise that has become sort of an obsession for many fans. However, the speculation about a remaster has been in the air for quite some time.

Since 2019, the devs have been rumored to be working on a Red Dead Redemption remaster, but nothing official has been announced by the folks at Rockstar Games. However, here’s a full breakdown of the rumors.

In November 2019, some excitement stirred the community. FiveM tweeted that they discovered Rockstar Games added platform deployment support for the Nintendo Switch. The devs managed to pull it off by integrating the Switch within RAGE, their proprietary engine.

However, this didn’t ultimately bloom to be something big. While the game files did seem to contain Nintendo Switch controls, it was only used for the Stadia version then. But activities from this time do suggest that RDR2 was being planned for a port to Switch.

Fan hype got some extra boost in August 2021 when Kotaku claimed that a Red Dead Redemption remaster is indeed in the works. However, there’s a catch to the plans as details revealed that such a remaster would see fruition only if Rockstar’s GTA Trilogy performed well in the market. While this contingency did dampen the mood, the possibilities had fans hoping, nonetheless.

July 2022 – October 2022: Next GTA title being developed, RDR Remaster plans shelved, and removal of the game from PlayStation Now

The GTA Trilogy failed to meet the expectations. The remastered trilogy wasn’t well received by the community because of too many bugs in the games with no significant upgrades compared to the original titles. Industry insider TezFunz2 claimed that GTA Trilogy’s failure prompted the devs to shelve plans for the Red Dead Redemption remaster as well as for the GTA IV.

In such circumstances, Kotaku made some more serious claims. In July 2022 Kotaku revealed that while Rockstar doesn’t have any immediate plans for remastered versions of RDR and GTA IV, they may be working on the next GTA title. While fans didn’t get what they were looking for, rumors of a new Grand Theft Auto game did make up for it. With GTA V released way back in 2013, a new GTA title will definitely excite the community.

In October 2022, Red Dead Redemption was removed from Sony’s cloud gaming streaming service and also from PlayStation Now. Speculations were once again in the air.

July 2023: South Korean rating board leak, Rockstar backend update, and platform buttons update

Gematsu reported something cryptic in July 2023. It seemed to show some rating from the rating board of South Korea, which looked like a new application for Red Dead Redemption. The rating also listed categories such as gore details and new modifications. This probably hinted at a newer RAGE, given how Red Dead Redemption 2 had its future set by then.

In late July, TezFunz and The Council stumbled upon something pretty interesting on Rockstar’s website backend. The discovery revealed a new entity for a rating related to Red Dead Redemption. Moreover, a high-quality, albeit slightly modified, RDR SVG logo was also found in the corners of the website. This hinted at a potential Red Dead Redemption website.

TezFunz didn’t stop right there and did some more digging. Soon, he found new platform buttons added for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. This undoubtedly hinted at a possible remaster rather than older titles being removed from platforms.

Present day: Peak anticipation for the Q1 report and debates on Remaster vs. Remake

On August 8, the Q1 report of Take-Two Interactive arrives. Fan speculations are focused on whether Rockstar Games announces the much-awaited Red Dead Redemption Remaster during the event. Some fans have gone so far as to claim that a trailer may drop days before the report.

Fans continue to be divided on the issue of whether Red Dead Redemption will be a remaster or a remake of the original title. With many developers, who worked on the original title claiming that the initial designing process was challenging for Rockstar, it would seem that an entire remake may be too demanding for the devs. Under such circumstances, a remaster may be more feasible, where visuals and mechanics are improved with the original gameplay remaining intact.

Rockstar’s return

Right now, fans couldn’t care less if the project is revealed to be a remaster or a remake. Most of them are just happy with the prospect of returning to RDR’s world after a whole decade. Set during the last days of the Wild West, Red Dead Redemption left a scathing mark on players.
