Given its colossal success, it was only a matter of time until Rockstar Games released a next-gen update for the game. However, it seems not everyone is happy with the way Rockstar has handled an update. With many fans reporting severe console based issues.

GTA V next-gen update accrues negative reactions from Team Green

The next wave of consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox series X|S boast significant hardware improvements from last generation. Accordingly, Rockstar’s next-gen update seeks to leverage these features to deliver improved visual fidelity and gameplay upgrades in GTA V. These upgrades include 4K resolution, frame rates up to 60 fps, HDR and ray tracing amongst other improvements.

These features combined with the power of Sony and Microsoft’s latest consoles would add a whole new level and immersion and realism to the 2013 title. At least that would be the case if it weren’t for severe optimization issues on the Xbox. Fans have been complaining online about poor frame rates on Team Green’s platform. This corroborated by Wccftech’s report on the matter paints a skewed picture.

While both the PlayStation and Xbox consoles offer similar visual quality modes, in practice the game is pretty titled in Sony’s favor. It holds up well in all three modes- Fidelity, Ray-tracing, and Performance. With only 1-2 lost frames when the console starts chugging.

The Xbox, on the other hand, struggles drastically in comparison. With the Series X hovering in the 30 to 40fps range in ray-tracing mode. The Series S is hit the hardest, with fps in the mid-20s during fidelity mode and around 40 fps in performance.

As one can expect, the fans are not happy with the reactions shared over Twitter.

It seems Rockstar Games has a long way to go before GTA V next-gen becomes an enjoyable experience for players across consoles. Improvements in visual fidelity would be hard to appreciate without stable frame rates.
