The Rock seems to know how iconic and successful the reveal was. The impact the original Xbox made on the industry is astronomical. Before the reveal, Microsoft was not known for a lot of things. It was primarily associated with the Office productivity suite, its Windows operating system and a massive antitrust lawsuit.

After its release, the Xbox did extremely well. It had a huge impact and could reach even the younger audiences. Its exclusive, Halo: Combat Evolved only heralded the console’s success. In North America alone, the console sold 1.5 million units even before 2001 wrapped up; Microsoft was going all in. The Rock was not as famous and well known as he is today and so, the company was taking a huge risk.

The Rock delivered amazingly with what he said. “The Xbox is everything The Rock is. Cutting-edge, powerful, exhilarating, and like The Rock, it will be the most electrifying thing coming out this year. What The Rock is to sports entertainment to the WWF, the Xbox will be to the video game industry: a breakthrough and certainly an original. The Rock doesn’t impress easily–you know that, Bill. But I’m pretty damn impressed with what we’re seeing here today.”
