Missed payments always stir controversy in the gaming world. Unfortunately for Genshin Impact fans, it is this beloved game that has faced criticism of late. Multiple voice actors have come forward on social media claiming they haven’t been paid for work completed months ago. With the outstanding payments amounting to thousands of dollars, the actors are calling for the game to join the SAG union.

Notably, voice actor Corina Boettger whose work spans thousands of lines in the game, by far the most lines of any NPC in Genshin Impact, has spoken out. After enduring months of delayed payments, Boettger brought the issue to the Genshin Impact community’s attention in a series of tweets on July 13. In response, the developer has issued a statement on Twitter as a step towards addressing this matter.

The problem, reportedly, doesn’t rest with developer HoYoverse, but rather with Formosa Group, the audio studio accountable for the English dubbing of the game. This isn’t the first time the Formosa Group has come under fire, either. The studio’s video game voice actors went on strike in 2016 citing unfair working conditions. Regardless, developer HoYoverse has issued a statement clarifying payments have been made from their end.

Though Boettger never accused HoYoverse directly for not paying them, Brandon Winckler was not of the same opinion. Brandon Winckler, famous for his voice roles in Final Fantasy VII Remake, Vinland Saga, and Disgaea 6, also takes on minor characters in Genshin Impact. Regrettably, Winckler has not received payment for his efforts in the past four months. To express his frustration, he, too, posted a series of tweets on July 13, garnering support from fans and fellow voice actors.

Thankfully, Winckler appears to receive timely payment for his involvement in ‘Honkai: Star Rail,’ another game from the HoYoverse. The English dub for that game is undertaken by another studio known as Rocket Sound, a collaboration that the voice actor expresses his fondness for. In his tweets, Winckler revealed how it’s not uncommon for voice actors to struggle for square meals due to the lack of unionization.

Regardless of whose fault the delayed payments are, both voice actors emphasized the necessity of placing the game’s work under a union contract. Do you think Genshin Impact will be better off as a part of the SAG? Let us know below.
