Elden Ring is undoubtedly a large game; it’s large and it’s part of a franchise that takes pride in being difficult. That’s why many newcomers who start playing this game out of hype end up being overwhelmed and end up leaving this game behind at the very start. While it’s understandable, it’s not advised.

It is however recommended that players carry on, and they can do that by following these very simple tips and tricks to get through the initial hours of Elden Ring.

Don’t start as Wretch

When one starts Elden Ring, they are introduced to a character creator and a class selection screen. This would give players a choice of how their character looks and what class it belongs to. For beginners, it is recommended that they choose the Confessor class; this class is a jack of all trades and gives players the freedom to go in any direction once they start understanding this game.

However, choosing the Wretch classes does not mean much in a game like this, as they don’t have any special ability and are one of the weakest starting classes of the game. However, they can be used for experiments in the later reruns of the game.

Don’t be ashamed of running past bosses in the initial hours

Players would eventually find themselves walking through a bunch of corridors, learning how to attack, block, and parry. Strong attacks and light attacks would be a player’s go-to modes of offense. Parrying is done by pressing the offhand button the moment someone attacks the player.

Once players learn these basic things, they can walk toward their first boss and basically die in its hands. Most new players cannot kill grafted scion, but players will get this chance much later, so do not fret if you die and simply move ahead.

Find as many Lost Graces as possible

Eventually, players would make it out of that corridor area and finally enter the open world area. People call it the Lands Between, and it’s pretty huge for sure. With no directions to follow, where does one go? Well, a player would not be able to miss a golden candle in front of them. Just sit there and rest for a second; it’s called grace.

Whenever one dies in The Lands Between, they respawn at one of these sites of grace, and if the player sits on a site of grace willingly, all the enemies they had killed till now would respawn, excluding bosses and minibosses.

Always look out for gaps and patterns in Enemy attacks

Once the player starts exploring this new world, they will notice that there are numerous types of enemies, and every one of them fights in their own way. This would mean that there is no surefire way to master combat in this game. But some tips could help eventually.

A new player should choose light weapons over anything too heavy. And then learn to read an enemy’s attack, know when they will attack, and then learn to dodge in an instant. Spot the attack, dodge, and then attack. If the player realizes that they cannot roll very well, use a shield, but remember, a shield does not prevent 100% damage.

Always start with lower-level skills to farm ruins in Elden Ring

Once the player starts the game, they should try to kill weaker enemies and rest at a nearby grace. This in turn grants players with runes, which are a currency that they exchange for leveling up. Now that there are a bunch of stats, the question comes “what should I level up to?” Well, other than the most obvious ones, like health and stamina, look at the stats that your favorite weapon scales with an increase in that stat.

Also, most bows and weapons work awesome with dexterity and strength builds, so a player can go in that direction if they feel like it. One important tip about leveling up is to kill as many small or large enemies in the starting area, again and again, to grind and level up as fast as possible. This way, a player would get used to the combat and level up too.

Are the bosses too difficult? Tip: Explore some more

Bosses are the USPs of these games; they pride themselves on these bosses and their difficulties, so do not expect them to be a cakewalk. But if the player thinks they are too hard and unfair, just go around and explore. Enter dungeons, kill minibosses, get used to that combat some more, and then come back to fight those bosses. Perseverance is the only way to beat Elden Ring.

Always organize your inventory before entering a boss battle

Always manage inventory in a way that it’s easier for the player to reach the healing and support items faster in the thick of a battle. Also, make sure that the healing item is the first item in the quick-access menu, as that’s the thing that the player will be using the most.

Another thing is to keep the inventory free of any load; just throw away or sell any useless items to keep the equipment load lighter.

Do not miss the crafting kits and map fragments scattered across Elden Ring

Many traders across the Lands Between sell and buy stuff. Some of them would sell an item called crafting kits, which teach the players about various recipes for various items. Do this to avoid buying those items once you run out of them; now players can simply craft them.

Also, whenever reaching a new area, go to the nearest landmark that shows up on the map and pick up a map fragment that allows expansion of the in-game map and fast travel.

Upgrade the healing flask as soon as possible in Elden Ring

Two items help in upgrading the two important attributes of the flask: golden seeds upgrade their usage, and sacred tears upgrade the amount of health they heal.

Golden seeds can be found near small golden plants, while sacred tears can be found in various churches of Marika.

Beating Margit, the fell omen

Before fighting this guy, go to Murkwater Cave Dungeon, fight patches, and let him live, and then when he starts selling various items, buy Margit’s Shackles for 5000 runes. These would make Margit way easier than he was before.

Now, when the player is in the arena with their co-op partners and Margit, just use the shackles to chain him down for a few seconds, hit him a few times, and run. This boss requires players to be very fast and nimble. So, find allies that can take the heat off the player’s character to catch a breath every now and then. It would take a few attempts but is an effective method.
