After all, it was based on 2013’s Game of the Year with the same name as the show. Recently, Super Mario Bros. also received a movie adaptation, which turned out to be a major hit.

After the success of The Last of Us, another classic video game is set to get adapted for the big screen. It is none other than the PlayStation-exclusive God of War. But are these video game adaptations a hint towards it becoming a new trend in Hollywood?

Bringing over renowned video game lores to the big screen is not a new tradition. There have been many attempts to adapt video games into movies and TV series. However, most of them turned out to be nothing more than disasters. While Prince of Persia and Assassin’s Creed were brought to the silver screen, they weren’t as successful as expected.

But things started to change with the release of series’ like ARCANE, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, and The Witcher, which were adaptations of video games like League of Legends, Cyberpunk 2077, and The Witcher series. Fans loving these adaptations gave more hope to creators in adapting video games into movies and TV series.

Then came HBO’s The Last of Us, whose success sure paved a new way for video game adaptations. Now creators have a formula for what they need to do with these adaptations to please the already established fanbase. Similarly, how superhero movies and shows became a trend in the entertainment industry.

What can be the downfall of this Hollywood trend?

This Hollywood trend undoubtedly can be profitable for the industry, as video games already have an established fanbase. So, it would be easier to attract them with adaptations based on their beloved games. Eventually, there might be more games that would start getting adapted into movies and TV series now.

However, these game adaptations are also no less than a gamble. Because pleasing an established fanbase is harder than a neutral audience. If there is something the adaptation might lack from the original source or even the slightest error in the casting, it can receive a lot of backlash from the same audience.
