Sony is hitting the major headlines and this time it is not for a good reason. Recently, Sony took over the brilliant makers of the Halo franchise, Bungie. Since then fans have been bombarded with the news of significant layoffs in the company. While the numbers are truly uncertain at this point, there has been a serious concern among people.

Now acquisitions are not a new thing in the Esports industry. Recently, Microsoft’s $69 million deal to take over Call of Duty makers, Activision Blizzard made a lot of noise in the media. Now Sony’s Bungie takeover is again making people concerned due to layoffs. 

Bungie makes significant layoffs after Sony’s takeover

Sony recently took over Bungie and since then the company is reportedly making significant layoffs. A recent insider and trusted source took their X (formerly Twitter) to share the news with the community- “Like I swear Sony dropped another billion to keep people on, now they start laying people off SMH.”

 Although Sony invested a hefty amount of $3.7 billion, the company included $1.2 billion dedicated to the old employee retention. However, Bungie is still making rounds for its tragic layoffs. Not only it brought concerns about the company’s future but it visibly questioned Sony’s strategies.

While this layoff is tragic, critics claim that it is a part of a bigger issue. This is because major companies are maintaining employee reductions to satiate the crowded employment market. Although the Esports industry is blooming, such layoffs strike a surprising portrayal of what reality is. Bungie’s recent layoffs were publicly addressed by Liana Ruppert, a video game journalist and content creator. After that, the whole community is currently going through many anxieties thinking about their favorite company’s future.

Layoffs in Esports industry is showing a difficult 2023

2023 has been truly difficult for the whole esports industry. For example, Sega’s Relic Entertainment reportedly laid off 121 employees. While Relic announced that their decision was to prioritize the core franchises, people were anxious about seeing layoffs in their favorite Company of Heroes 3 makers. Not just Relic, CD Projekt RED also laid off 30 employees along with Ubisoft who dismissed 60 employees this year. One of the biggest layoffs was spotted in EA and Epic Games. While EA fired 1000 employees, Epic’s number is still uncountable.

The rise of layoffs in the Esports industry now poses a great question. This is because if the industry is truly blooming then why companies are forced to lay off the employees. Bungie’s employee layoff after Sony’s acquisition added more fuel to fans’ anxiousness.
