Sony’s PlayStation 5 life cycle is in the full swing now. Fans have been asking Sony to leave behind PlayStation 4 and focus more on PlayStation 5 ever since the console was launched. Only at the start, the install base of PS5 was not as big as Sony wanted it to be. This might have been due to the stock shortage that occurred during the pandemic period.

However, at the start of this year, Sony announced that they have sold 30 million PS5 units and the console is also more freely available to purchase. And maybe that’s why Sony has taken this next step!

Sony is finally shifting focus to PlayStation 5 exclusives

Last year there were a number of big PlayStation exclusives that launched on both PS5 and PS4. This was a piece of good news for people who only had a PlayStation 4 in their living rooms. But owners of PlayStation 5 saw this as a betrayal.

Some said that their reason to buy PlayStation 5 was to get access to real next-gen titles, with next-gen visuals. Making games cross-gen meant that they would lack visual fidelity. The older and less powerful PlayStation 4 would force developers to make compromises on those games.

But now that Sony has sold enough consoles, it appears they have decided to finally shift their focus. And that is why a recent trailer released by Sony, which showed off 23 PlayStation games coming in 2023, had only eight games that were cross-gen.

Some big games on that list, like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Dead Space, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores, are listed as “coming to PS5 only.”

As has been talked about before, 2023 would finally begin PlayStation’s journey into the next generation. A number of high-profile titles are focusing only on PS5 consoles hence, they would feature some truly outstanding visuals.

A game being cross-gen does not affect its success!

Even though a number of cross-gen games find themselves lacking in the visual department, that does not mean those games are set for failure. Sony PlayStation’s biggest launch in 2022 was the God of War: Ragnarok. This game was launched on both PS5 and PS4, yet it looked pretty good and it quickly became the most-selling PlayStation first-party title ever.

The developers did mention that it was held back by PlayStation 4 and they were not able to utilize the full potential of PlayStation 5, which did not matter to fans.
