Final Fantasy games have been on the market for years now. Each and every single one of those games is unique and has its own kind of fanbase. The biggest reason behind this divide has always been that Square Enix often makes every new game different from the last one. From Final Fantasy 1 to the Final Fantasy VII Remake.

This is commendable and confusing at the same time; it makes it hard for people to keep track of what they like and do not like. The combat in Final Fantasy games has been something of an issue for many. It keeps changing, there’s no way for people to explain how these games play. Over time, they progressed from turn-based to grid-based strategies, from semi-realtime to fully real-time.

It has worked too; the games have been successful, and most of the time the transition has received a positive response from its fans.

But now, it appears Square Enix is taking a small step back. Some rumors suggest that in the upcoming remake of Final Fantasy IX, the combat will once again be turn-based. It is also suggested that the developers would be implementing the ATB gauge in combat.

This has been a mainstay for most of the series, though. Some even suggest that this game, in terms of quality and combat, would be more similar to Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core Reunion than any other game in the series.

It is not a bad thing per se; Crisis Core Reunion was an excellent rerelease of a beloved game. It was an instant success too; hence, it’s not a surprise that Square Enix has decided to go in this direction this time around. Now there’s only one thing we can hope for to see this game released as soon as possible.
