The world of football is now in a state of disarray after recent developments between European clubs. The news came in the day before yesterday, where 12 European clubs announced the formation of ESL, or European Super League.
The backlash from football fans and players from different parts of the world was almost instant. FIFA and UEFA also released a series of responses to this extreme decision. FIFA has stated that these clubs will cease to be part of any FIFA or UEFA competition with immediate effect if this League sees formation.
The proposed ESL is not an ideal competitive league, as it does not involve any relegation for the founding members. This means the 12 clubs who will form the League will never need to earn a place in the competition and be able to play it by default. This goes against the principle of any fair competition. The League will also affect the finances of smaller clubs indirectly, rendering other heated competitions, like the UCL and Europa, worthless.

The 12 clubs also include three of the four semi-finalists of this year’s UEFA Champions League. Some suspect there is a chance Paris Saint Germain will become champions if ESL sees the light of the day.
How will this affect video game titles like FIFA 22?
The rumored mastermind behind this ridiculous idea seems to be Florentino Perez, president of Real Madrid. However, there is no space for any concentrated blame game as all 12 clubs took a conscious greedy decision to enter this pact.
Furthermore, with the strong backlash from both FIFA and UEFA, speculations arise what will happen to the video game titles. FIFA boss, Gianni Infantino, gave a few statements yesterday, where he stated he ‘strongly disapproves’ of ESL. He also made clear his stance on the 12 founding clubs.
“Either you are in or you are out.”

This might also cater to the upcoming FIFA 22 title, published by Electronic Arts. There is a possibility that upcoming FIFA titles might remove the 12 founding teams of the ESL. This might give rise to an interesting situation, as FIFA is a very popular franchise globally. However, among the 12 teams are also football giants like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Juventus, among others, who have fan bases in millions.
Therefore, it might be a tricky situation for EA to produce a game that might see a drop in popularity because of recent developments. Further to that, Konami’s PES might capitalize on this situation and take the top spot in football sims. There is already news of Konami using the Unreal Engine for PES 2022, which is considerable development.
