Ever since the pandemic last year, people all around the world understood the significance and value of the online space. The lockdown restricted access to the outside world for many people, so they had to switch to online methods to continue their work and other essentials. This new normal showed the companies how effective and profitable a virtual space can be. Which led to the creation of VR concepts like Facebook’s Meta.
How will Microsoft and Facebook partnership affect the Metaverse?
This surprise partnership opens up brand new avenues for the metaverse. With this collaboration, Microsoft will bring its biggest services — Teams, Office, Windows, and even Xbox Cloud Gaming — to Meta’s Quest VR headsets. This, in term, changes the whole aspect of Virtual Reality. The Metaverse has actually started to shape up like a workspace.

In the latest Meta Connect Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella said, “We are bringing a Microsoft Teams immersive meeting experience to Meta Quest in order to give people new ways to connect with each other,” The users will be able to, “connect, share, collaborate,” as if they are “together in person.”
Not only work, but this collaboration will also greatly affect gaming in the Metaverse, as Xbox Cloud Gaming will also make its debut in the Meta’s Quest VR headsets. This will allow the subscribers to stream games on their Quest. But this won’t be as immersive as a native VR experience for the Xbox games. It will let the users play their favorite games, but with a controller on a giant screen projected inside the headset.
How did fans react to this collaboration?
When the senior editor of The Verge shared the news on Twitter from his official account, it received a very mixed reception from the fans. People were very skeptical about this news. Some said that this is a “failed product”, others kept a very positive approach towards it, counting the new opportunities and innovations that it will bring. Some even made memes about the times when the metaverse will be the norm for communication and everyone will be strapped with a headset all the time.
For people saying this is dumb, it is for this generation. When AR really kicks off in maybe 2 years Microsoft will have a full office suite ready to go and integrate into your real space and meta will have a suite of productivity apps to sell it to parents and "the wife".
