Nintendo recently surprised its fans by bringing back a classic 1999 title, Mario Golf, from the N64 era for the Switch console. The iconic game is now available for anyone who’s never experienced it. Especially the younger generation of the players.

However, it seems like there’s a mystery omission of a major element in Nintendo’s Mario Golf 64 that just made its comeback. A YouTuber tried to throw the light on this missing feature while giving a valid reason for the same as well.

In case anyone missed it, somehow, the game from more than two decades ago arrived on the Nintendo 64 Expansion pack on April 15 on Switch Online. Camelot Software Planning is the developer of this title that sees Mario, his friends, and his enemies playing golf in various courses based on different themes. Upon its debut, it was the second installment in the Mario Golf franchise.

While the game is fun to dive into, there’s something that the YouTube channel GameXplain noticed recently. Upon close investigation, it found that when you go to the character selection screen, there are a total of 14 available options. But below them are four slots that are currently blank. This is quite a bizarre scenario to witness for any player.

However, GameXplain had a reason for why this is the case right now.

Back in 1999, along with the main game, a Game Boy Color version of Mario Golf was also released. And players were actually able to transfer four characters who were only available for that specific version. These four characters were Kid, Sherry, Azalea, and Joe. They could not be unlocked in any other way possible. Plus they functioned quite differently from the main Mario Golf roster of characters.

Now, according to the YouTube channel, it may happen in the future that Nintendo might add them back via new version of the game for the NSO. And that will be possible if there happens to be a re-release of Game Boy and Game Boy Color games for the modern Nintendo Switch.
