Starfield is going to launch in just two months from now. Fans have been waiting for this game for the longest time. This wait has stretched for about eight years, which is a long time to be waiting for something.

While the wait has reduced from years to months to weeks, fans have also gotten a better look at this game. And Bethesda, too, has opened up a bit about this brand-new world that they have worked on for so long. In one such showcase, director Todd Howard explained that this game is Skyrim in space. But many fans beg to differ.

It is very common for a developer to compare their latest game to their best title before that. This is done in an attempt to tell people how much heart they have put into something. And it’s an honest thing too; they are not undermining their last game; they are just trying to sell their latest game.

And it makes sense for Bethesda to compare Starfield to Skyrim and not Fallout 4. They do this because of the kind of work that went into this game. It is well known that Bethesda built an engine from scratch for Skyrim, just to accommodate a bunch of new gameplay features.

For Fallout 4, they simply updated their Skyrim engine. It was a revolutionary update indeed, but it was just that—an update. Volumetric lighting, Global Illumination, God Rays—yes, Fallout 4 looked very beautiful with these things indeed. But the engine remained the same.

Moving onto Starfield, Bethesda yet again went back to their engine and made something new out of it. They basically claim to have rebuilt their engine to make everything possible in Starfield. Things like space travel and those 1000 planets, everything works thanks to this new engine.

But gameplay-wise, this game cannot be further from Skyrim. It is closer to the Fallout series in that sense. It has sci-fi; it has gun-based combat; it has spaceships, and it might even have some aliens. Although, among those numerous planets, one or two might just be full of lush environments. This would make people nostalgic for Skyrim, but that’s pretty much where this similarity ends.

On the other hand, there are a lot of fans who do not know about this game as of yet; who knows, players might end up finding further similarities with Skyrim when playing the game. For that, though, they have to wait just a little bit longer.
