Nintendo is known for its kid-friendly light-hearted titles. They try to stay away from making their games too violent as much as they can. And if it’s not possible to ignore violence, they’d rather keep their characters out of harm’s way.

Even in games like The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, it is pretty evident they were trying their best to make sure Link escaped his gruesome death. But there’s a game in which they kill one of their most beloved mascots; you would not believe what game that is.

Super Mario is one of the most beloved characters in the history of video games. It was pretty evident when the Super Mario Bros. movie broke all the records and became one of the highest-earning animation movies of all time.

Even the hype for the next game starring Nintendo’s jumpy mascot is somewhat unreal. Fans cannot wait to get their hands on this unique-looking game. Of course, most of that anticipation comes from those new fans who loved the recent movie. Yet, it is pretty evident that Mario has a huge fanbase.

How would those people feel when they realized that Nintendo actually let this mascot of theirs die in one of their recent games? Yes, Mario actually dies in one of the endings of Nintendo Switch-exclusive Super Smash Bros. Ultimate!

For those unaware, Super Smash Bros. is a series of games where many of Nintendo’s characters duke it out against each other. It’s Nintendo’s more family-friendly take on those usual fighting games that are often much more violent. Smash Bros. games tend to star almost all of Nintendo’s mascots and sometimes even characters from a bunch of third-party titles. Those include characters like Bayonetta, Snake from Metal Gear games, and even Mario’s arch-enemy, Sonic the Hedgehog.

In this game, besides the typical fighting mode, there’s an adventure mode. It gives players a bit of a story that leads them to a moment where they have to make a hard choice. They are asked to choose what they would like to fight against light or darkness.

If players choose to fight light, and if they succeed in defeating it, then naturally darkness takes over. The moment darkness takes over, Mario is shown just falling over and dying. This is indeed a very shocking thing for those who go into it unawares; here’s hoping the developers try and give players a better context for this kind of end.
