Why are Metal Gear Solid 4 speedrunners active only on two days of the week?
In Metal Gear Solid 4, speedrunners can only carry out their race against the clock on Sundays and Wednesdays of every week. While this selection of days may seem odd to casual gamers, there is a huge reason why speedrunners can’t try to speedrun on other days. The task of speedrunning mainly involves completing the game in the least possible amount of time. To achieve this, speedrunners constantly take some shortcuts in the missions of the game.
In Metal Gear Solid 4 there is a gun dealer by the name of Drebin. He offers a variety of guns to the players, which can help them complete the missions faster. And the primary choice of all speedrunners fighting the Act 3 boss is M82A2, a .50 caliber sniper rifle. However, this rifle costs a lot of money to buy, precisely 200,000 Drebin Points.
So the speedrunners have two options, either complete some tasks to earn more DP but waste more time, or wait till Sundays and Wednesdays of every week. On these specific days, the shop run by Drebin offers a 20% discount on all guns. The speedrunners can then buy the gun on these days to set new speedrunning records. Some speedrunners also keep resetting their PlayStation clock to Sundays or Wednesdays to keep the discount active all the time.
