Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Campaign is finally here thanks to the Early Access release. However, while most players are probably busy making their way through various action-packed missions, it seems like those who have already finished the single-player experience are not too happy with it. In fact, they believe that the Campaign has been ruined in MW3.
The latest game is a direct sequel to last year’s Modern Warfare II. Its story takes place right after the events of its predecessor. While featuring Task Force 141, it also brings back the ruthless villain Vladimir Makarov. Following the debut of MW3’s Campaign, many players have shared how they felt about it. Most of them, though, are echoing a similar sentiment when it comes to how the devs have designed the single-player quests, especially with the addition of open combat missions.
Players believe Open Combat Missions have spoiled the Campaign in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Sledgehammer had revealed the open combat missions a few months ago. This feature’s introduction was hyped a lot due to its ability to offer a sort of open-world vibe. Unlike the regular mission, having a linear approach, OCMs enable the players to craft their own loadout according to their play style. Plus, they can apply their unique strategies to accomplish a given objective. Basically, OCMs give endless possibilities to finish one quest in more than one specific manner. Sadly, however, the introduction of open combat missions hasn’t really impressed a lot of players.
Since the debut of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s Campaign early access, the internet has witnessed some harsh reactions criticizing the involvement of OCMs. Players are simply upset because they think open combat missions have ruined the campaign. Recently, a Reddit user took to the social platform to share a similar feeling after completing the Campaign mode.
The Redditor mentioned that if the game had a very limited amount of OCMs, it would have been okay. But including about six such missions in a single-player only experience is just not right. The user highlighted the fact that COD Campaigns mostly deal with team work. However, the heavy emphasis on open combat missions, mostly putting the main character away from the squad, has simply ruined that feeling in Modern Warfare 3.
The Reddit post read, “Call of duty (especially modern warfares) were all about the immersion of military teamwork, high tensioned missions with deadly, badass movie like military professionalism. The open combat missions are the total opposite of that….” The user added, “I am really disappointed in this campaign. Yeah there are missions which are not open combat, and they are quite good imo. But we got a half cod campaign for full price…”
It will be interesting to see how the devs respond to the situation regarding open combat missions. For now, it seems like the single-player experience is having some serious issues due to players getting frustrated.
Is the overall Campaign good in Modern Warfare 3?
A lot of players are not enjoying it. At least that’s what some of the recent social media reactions have implied. Following the arrival of the early access on November 2, most of the users have been sharing their disappointment over the entire Campaign setup.
One such Reddit post read, “It’s even more heartbreaking that it’s from Infinity Ward. Nothing about this felt as emotional as the original MW trilogy, Infinite Warfare, hell even Ghosts.” Further, the user commented on the price as well. “Like damn. $70? That’s fine and dandy if you enjoy purely multiplayer and grinding streaks with the boys but there was always that subset of people that enjoyed replaying campaigns over and over again (me.)”

Some players are saying that Modern Warfare 3 doesn’t deliver the kind of experience previous COD titles have offered. Especially when it comes to having an enjoyable single-player mode. Per the users who have finished the Campaign, it’s more like finishing Warzone quests in large areas.
Also, many fans are not liking that it only takes around 4 or 5 hours to reach the credits screen. They feel like the story could have been stretched in a better way rather than making everything so quick where there’s no place for extended cut scenes or character development. Simply put, the overall reception has been pretty underwhelming.
