After a series of disappointing games, Sega’s Sonic Frontiers launched earlier this month to a positive critical reception and an even better response from fans. It features a wide-open world and a number of mechanics that are very new to the series. And it is being lauded for its visuals and use of the open world in challenges and its boss battles.

Sonic team’s new open-world takes on the Sonic series has fans very excited. And now that they are done with this game, they are wondering where the series would go next.
The future of Sonic is an open world
Recently, while talking to Sector, Frontiers’ producer Takashi Iizuka opened up a little on this topic. He explained how they decide to take the game in this direction once again and how this game’s success is defining its future.
While talking about the game, he said, “Yes, you are right. Just like Sonic Adventure, our goal for Sonic Frontiers was to create a game that would be the cornerstone of future Sonic games. It is a brand-new approach for the franchise, but we have been conscious to honor Sonic’s roots as well – the game still needs to feel like a Sonic game.”

Future games are planned to be open world too and they are focusing on player feedback to know what they need to change in the future titles.
According to Iizuka, this game’s success and this “Brand new approach mark another defining moment for the franchise.”

He also said that ever since the series started getting 3D levels, their target has always been to “evolve the linear” giving players the freedom to explore the surrounding environment without restrictions.
It seems like they have succeeded too. Players are really enjoying the freedom they get in Sonic’s new adventure. And they are also loving how that open environment is being taken advantage of in the game’s puzzles. The developer team has been trying to evolve the 3D Sonic games into an open world for a while now.
After the release of 2D Sonic Mania, the 3D version of it have found it hard to find success. If critics are to be believed, they always end up doing one thing or another wrong. So, it’s refreshing to see a 3D Sonic game that actually succeeds at what it’s trying to do.
