Call of Duty is famous for its action-packed gameplay, as with each installment players explore a variety of storylines. However, there are no games in the franchise that can boast better narrative experiences than the original Modern Warfare series or the Black Ops series. Two of Call of Duty’s most lucrative sub-series, these games launched two console generations ago continue to make waves, as reports about sales leave fans astounded.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops 2 climbed to the top of sales charts in the UK. The climb in sales is attributed to the introduction of backward compatibility for these titles.
Backward compatibility brings a sales boost to Call of Duty

It is no secret Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops 2 remain popular among Call of Duty fans today. Both games were sequels to an incredibly popular series in the franchise. Moreover, they came at a time when Call of Duty multiplayer was at a new high, with players spending hours upon hours playing the game. With backward compatibility, it opened new avenues for sales.
Xbox recently fixed issues with matchmaking on newer consoles. With this update to backward compatibility, fans had all they needed to get back into the game. Subsequently, sales for both titles rose in the UK, with an additional boost coming from sales running on Xbox, in the Xbox Ultimate Game Sale. Black Ops 2 took the fourth spot on the UK list. Modern Warfare 2 followed close behind. It ranked fifth on the list. The data about its sales comes from GSD. These old titles are not the only games on the list. Call of Duty Modern Warfare II, released in 2022, also makes it on the list. Coming in at number 9, the newest installment in the series performed well in the UK as well.

The fix brought to matchmaking represents a significant step in backward compatibility. Matchmaking became a sore subject for players on newer consoles, as it worsened the gameplay experience. Because of the fix, fans have a chance to relive some of the best moments in Call of Duty history. The two games represented a golden period for Call of Duty fans. Fans can now resume their quest for the Nuke on Modern Warfare 2 or the Swarm on Black Ops 2.
