The Call of Duty series is hailed for its amazing roaster of memorable characters. Not just the famous protagonists, but even some of the villains have also made a lasting impact on millions of fans across the globe. Primarily due to their strong presence and aura in multiple entries. Moreover, when it comes to some of the most popular names, one can hardly forget Vladimir Makarov.
The ruthless character made his appearance in the original Modern Warfare sub-series more than a decade ago. Nevertheless, his grand comeback was confirmed last year during the mid-credits scene of MWII. While it’s certain that the antagonist is making a return, it seems like his role in the Call of Duty universe is more than what meets the eye. Going by a shocking theory, revealed recently, he’s actually going to be a serious threat to eliminate for Task Force 141.

InkSlasher is a renowned Call of Duty YouTuber and gamer. He keeps sharing interesting videos about all the aspects of the long-running action series. Especially when it comes to the characters featured in different entries. Recently, he dropped a video while discussing a theory regarding Makarov.
Per the YouTuber, it seems like Makarov is actually Perseus – the infamous villain of 2020’s Black Ops Cold War from Treyarch. This character turned out to be an interesting addition to the Call of Duty franchise in numerous ways. It was later found out that Perseus was just a code name that was used as a means to an end.
The Soviet intelligence officer, known as Perseus, left a huge impression on the story of Black Ops Cold War. In a non-canon ending, it was revealed that he was just using this name to make everyone believe that he was the real Perseus. What this scene implied was that the bad guy was not just a single individual.
Moving further, the mantle of Perseus was taken over by Stitch in the succeeding seasons of Cold War. When Adler confronts him, Stitch tells him that the name doesn’t belong to a man. Because it is, in fact, an ideal, passed on to each person using it. Most importantly, Stitch also reveals that he’s not the first Perseus and he won’t end up being the last one either. And that this legacy is going to continue for a long time until their objective is accomplished.
YouTuber InkSlasher then also goes on to explain how Modern Warfare II’s story can continue with the plot of Perseus. He says that since the villain will be leading the ultranationalist group, his plans will be bigger this time. Also, he won’t let anything or anyone stand in his way. This becomes clear from the ending scene of MWII itself, where he’s been teased by a familiar scene. The latter makes a reference to the ‘No Russian’ mission from the original Modern Warfare 2. Makarov will go to any extent in order to see the Soviet Union’s rise once again – something that Perseus also wanted.

While this is just a theory for now, it will be interesting to see if it happens to be true or not. Activision is expected to reveal a brand new Call of Duty this year. According to the reports revealed so far, it’s going to be an extension of MWII and its events. This means that Makarov will definitely make his presence felt – either as himself or as Perseus.
