The Gulag is a unique aspect of Call of Duty: Warzone that helps the game stand out from other battle royale titles. After dying for the first time in Warzone, players find themselves thrown into the Gulag, where they get a fair chance to fight for a second life.

Winning a 1v1 gunfight against an opponent in the Gulag grants an opportunity to redeploy into the Verdansk battlefield automatically. From there, it is up to the player whether they want to exact vengeance on the squad responsible for killing them previously.

However, losing the 1v1 gunfight results in possible elimination from the match. Unless there are teammates to purchase redeployment, defeat in the Gulag means one is done for good. Overall, the Gulag is one of the several unique mechanics implemented in Warzone that gamers have grown fond of.

To keep the experience refreshing, Warzone developers have also made sure to update new designs for the Gulag from time to time. Gamers have fought duels in a handful of Gulag maps in the year-long history of Activision’s game. In this article, we count down our rankings of which Gulag is the best in Call of Duty: Warzone.

3) Nuketown Gulag in Call of Duty: Warzone

Featuring at third, we have the Nuketown adaptation of the Gulag. With the integration between Black Ops Cold War and Warzone last December, Activision changed the Gulag design into a version of Nuketown.

This design replicated the original Nuketown map layout, but with the home interiors and backyard blocked off. As a result, the duel was confined to the central part of the map.

However, this variant of the 1v1 gunfight map did not seem to go down too well with the Warzone community. Players complained that the Nuketown Gulag didn’t bring a balanced and fair fight to the table because of its asymmetrical layout.

2) Standoff Gulag

Season 3 of Black Ops Cold War and Warzone recently brought in another new Gulag design. Based on a classic map from Black Ops 2, the latest 1v1 gunfight arena within Verdansk is a partial recreation of Standoff.

Operators spawn in for the gunfight at an end of the street, either near a dark sedan or a white truck. They are equidistant from the makeshift tank at the center of the intersection. The iconic central building in Standoff sits in between, with an unfinished second level having multiple points of access.

For some, the Standoff Gulag has been an improvement over the Nuketown variant from Season 1. Others are not too impressed with Warzone’s latest Gulag map, primarily because of its complex design that allegedly facilitates campers.

1) Gulag Showers in Call of Duty: Warzone

Featuring at the top is the original Gulag from the old days of Warzone. It is based on the Gulag Showers map introduced in the Gunfight mode from 2019’s Modern Warfare.

The original Gulag layout came with three different variants chosen at random. Before the release of Season 1, the cutscene showed the player being put into a cell above Gulag Showers. The latest intro shows the player restrained in an interrogation room beneath the Gulag Showers map.

To this day, many players consider Gulag Showers to be the best Gulag design to have ever existed in Warzone. This is because of the simple and symmetrical layout of the original design, something that fans have been asking for to be added back.

There you have it, the Gulag Showers map is the best Gulag to exist in Warzone, in our opinion. Rebirth Island also has its own version of a Gulag system. Situated under the Prison Block, this 1v1 gunfight map spans a roughly square area that is normally inaccessible. We have not listed Rebirth Island’s Gulag separately because it’s available during specific game modes.
