The situation regarding Call of Duty has become extremely weird these days. Especially since the launch of Modern Warfare II last year. The ongoing entry in the long-running series has ended up having a rollercoaster ride. While it is breaking sales records, a lot of players have been highly disappointed with its content and treatment to the overall experience. It’s because the game has got a two-year life cycle and according to many fans, it’s not delivering on its promise of rolling out engaging content for such a massive period.

So far, the information regarding Modern Warfare II being a two-year game has been widespread. So much so that many of the gamers won’t believe the fact that it was never going to be the case at all!

Yes, the latest Call of Duty entry was never going to get an extension. In fact, Activision had already made it clear – a year ago. Plus, this was months before MWII even came out, in October 2022. Popular media outlet EarlyGame published an article in February 2022. It featured updated information regarding the publisher’s plans for the franchise’s future.

The article clearly revealed that Activision disputed all the rumors for CoD 2023’s delays and a potential end to yearly releases. This news was part of a statement sent by the company via email to all the major outlets. It stated that not just in 2022, but a new Call of Duty premium (and free-to-play titles) will come out in 2023 as well.

“We have an exciting slate of premium and free-to-play Call of Duty experiences for this year, next year and beyond. Reports of anything otherwise are incorrect. We look forward to sharing more details when the time is right.”

The statement underlines the words that rumors suggesting “anything otherwise” were totally incorrect. Meaning that several reputed insiders who claimed that 2023 was going to be empty in terms of having a standalone CoD release were not accurate. And now, it seems to be the case as well. Especially considering a new wave of recent leaks for an upcoming, “full premium” title from Activision this year.
