Last year was fairly disappointing for Activision and Call of Duty, as the series witnessed an underperforming installment in Vanguard. It not only received unfavorable reactions from critics and players but also sold less than expectations. A year later, however, Modern Warfare II has succeeded in changing the story upside down.

Riding on an unmatched hype train, Modern Warfare II had a big task to achieve. Along with impressing the fans, it had to deliver in terms of sales also, compared to what happened to Vanguard in 2021. Well, the latest Call of Duty premium has comfortably accomplished its mission with a record launch.

Call of Duty gets the biggest launch since 2019 as Modern Warfare II tops the UK physical sales chart

According to the details revealed by GamesIndustry.biz, Modern Warfare II has opened to a phenomenal response in the United Kingdom. Following its arrival last week, the anticipated sequel managed to outperform last year’s Vanguard in terms of physical units sold in the European markets.

Infinity Ward‘s Call of Duty Modern Warfare II physical sales are 42 percent more than Vanguard by Sledgehammer Games. Furthermore, the newest title is around nine percent better in terms of boxed sales than 2020’s Black Ops Cold War.

However, when compared to its predecessor from 2019, MWII’s physical sales are 61 percent down. But then again, digital downloads have increased a lot in the last three years so they might eventually push the latest offering further. Details from digital sales are not yet revealed so one cannot assume the difference between the two titles just yet.

When it comes to the performance on various platforms, 53 percent of Modern Warfare II’s boxed sales were on the PS5. Then comes the Xbox on which the 2022 Call of Duty sold 29 percent. PS4 witnessed around 18 percent of sold units for the game.

Overall, the newest CoD premium from Activision is 2022’s third biggest physical release. It’s only behind EA’s FIFA 23 and Nintendo’s Pokemon Legends: Arceus. For those who are interested in rankings, here are the Top 10 best-sellers in the UK after the launch of MWII:
