Ever since the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Beta, it has been a subject of controversy in the community. The players are getting frustrated and angry at the game as early Beta gets filled with hackers and cheaters, ruining the lobbies and online multiplayer SBMM.
The Call of Duty MW2 Dev’s action against the hackers
On September 24, the developer of Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward announced on Twitter that they have heard about the problems of the players. The lobbies getting dismantled and the overall degradation of gameplay experience has made the devs worried. They want their game to be as fun and fair for all the players. So any misplays will not be tolerated.

They have also shown their concern towards the issue of disbanding lobbies. In their tweet, they said, “We’ve heard a lot of you on disbanding lobbies. We’re working on a few tweaks to increase the chance of lobbies staying together, and improving the UI when it happens.”

Overall, the response is taken very positively by the fans. They were very happy that their concerns were getting attention. As the fans love the game, they didn’t want it to be ruined because of some bad players who are selfishly using third-party software and hacking tools to win games, damaging the quality of the SBMM lobbies.

What is the SBMM controversy?
SBMM or Skill Based Matchmaking is not new in Multiplayer games. Call of Duty had started having this feature since Black ops 2. In reality, it is an engagement-based algorithm that is specific for each player. If a player logs off after a hard match, this algorithm will keep it in memory and it won’t match them up with players who happily play through multiple challenging matches.

This formula in theory is very appealing as there is always a skill gap in lobbies, making it unfair. But the implementation had many issues and could easily be misused by hackers and cheaters. That is why, ever since the release of the Beta of MW2, the online SBMM has been a topic of controversy among the players.
