Since its highly awaited arrival, Call of Duty Modern Warfare II has been in the news for endless reasons. Despite being a blockbuster in terms of establishing sales milestones, a lot of players ended up giving it a lukewarm response. Well, that was the situation until Season 2 made its way earlier this month. Thanks to the introduction of new elements and gameplay modes, the overall experience is improving now. And most of the credit for that goes to the Ranked Play mode – but with a unique twist to the classic format.

The latest season has revealed a refreshed Ranked Play mode for Call of Duty players. Now, they also have what’s called the SR rating while making their progression through the matches. While some users had a little idea about it upon its announcement, not everyone is still aware of what it is and how it actually works. But now, we have an explanation, coming directly from the developer who’s worked on the newest Ranked Play experience.

What is SR in Ranked Play of Call of Duty Modern Warfare II?

Lawrence Metten has been working as a Lead Game Designer for Treyarch. The latter is the main studio that’s worked on bringing Ranked Play to the current installment with Season 2. Metten is mainly involved in the making of the Ranked Play, along with adding fresh elements to it, like SR.

Recently, the developer took to Twitter to explain everything about how SR rating works in Call of Duty Modern Warfare II’s Ranked Play. He revealed a thread where he mentioned various details regarding the competitive mode.

Metten clarified that a player’s displayed SR represents their Ranked Play skill and also their Skill Division. “In MWII, everyone begins their grind at 0 SR in Bronze I. You gain SR when you win, and lose SR when you lose – with the amount of SR determined by a combo of personal and team performance.”

Interestingly, though, there’s another factor involved in determining the SR gains. “A hidden skill value we track for each player that we’ll call “Hidden Performance Range” – or “HPR” for short.”

The dev explained that HPR is what their underlying performance systems think about a player’s performance. It helps in predicting how well the player will stack up against others. So if a player defeats other users who are having a higher HPR, then the player’s HPR value will increase eventually. All things considered, being consistent in winning is important.

“HPR and SR are directly linked. You may start at 0 SR in MWII Ranked, but with each win the SR system is trying to climb you closer towards your underlying HPR. The further your SR is below your HPR target, the more SR you gain after each win.”
