Call of Duty fans will be shocked to know this but it’s hundred percent true. Going by the latest reports, it’s been revealed that a very controversial release under the Black Ops series, seven years ago, was going to feature an open-world campaign!
Call of Duty Black Ops 3 almost had the first open-world Campaign in the franchise’s history
Few years ago, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier had mentioned that 2015’s Black Ops title from Treyarch Studios was going to consist of a broad, open-world single-player format. However, it was eventually scrapped mid-way and never saw the light of the day.
Now, several newly leaked images online have reportedly revealed what Black Ops 3’s open-world map could have looked like. A Reddit user, named u/Purpletoaster, recently posted a series of multiple pictures on Imgur website. Upon seeing them, Call of Duty fans will notice that 2015’s Black Ops entry was actually much more than what it was made to have upon the launch, according to Insider Gaming.
That is, the game could have ended up having a sprawling, open-world single-player experience. Thus, it could have become the first title in the action series to feature such a Campaign. In general, Call of Duty games always come out with linear storylines and restricted map areas.

Given the fact that Black Ops 3 was also a slightly controversial game in the series, such changes could have made things better or worse. Maybe that’s why the team of Treyarch decided to not experiment. Eventually, the officially released title had a comparatively shorter single-player experience. Fans also didn’t like it much to say the least.
