Steam is one of the biggest online stores from where players can buy games digitally. With over 50,000 games, you’d think it was only for the PC, but Steam provides support for Xbox controllers too. But what about other consoles? Well, gone are the days when PlayStation users were left out.

Most games nowadays have controller support. While the Xbox controller has been supported by the PC for years, the PlayStation controllers have a different story. However, the recent steam update changes the way the UI works to facilitate icons for PlayStation 4 and 5 controller support.

PlayStation Controllers with Steam

In a recent update, Steam has expanded its controller support to include PlayStation controllers, specifically the DualShock and DualSense controllers. This update aims to help millions of players with PlayStation controllers easily find games that are compatible with these devices.

The Steam store has been upgraded to make it easier to explore games based on controller types. Players can now set filters based on the controller used recently or manually selected. Each store page provides detailed information about controller support for Xbox, DualSense, and DualShock controllers. A category for games utilizing the Steam Input API is also included.

The store contains a “filter by supported device,” option with four options:

  • Xbox Controller
  • DualShock Controller
  • DualSense Controller
  • All Controllers

The games that support DualShock 4 controllers include Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, No Man’s Sky, Mortal Kombat 1, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Similarly, players can use the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller to play games like Hogwarts Legacy, Diablo IV, Battlefield 2042, and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade.

The Steam library also now includes a compatibility section providing information about a game’s compatibility with the preferred controller.

Difference in controller support from Steam

A game with full controller support allows players to perform almost all common actions and interactions expected with a controller. It doesn’t necessarily mean the game uses every feature on the controller. For games that have partial support, some interactions may require a keyboard, and button prompts on the screen may not match the controller. Players might need to use a mouse and keyboard for certain actions.

Supporting PlayStation controllers on the PC is more complex due to variations in developer support. Some games may only support USB connections, and developers are encouraged to use Steam Input API for broader compatibility.
