Over the past 8-9 months, Apex Legends has suffered the same fate as so many games before it as it became a breeding ground for cheaters. Since Apex Legends is a competitive battle royale game, players will do anything to gain an advantage over their opponents. These methods range from abusing ‘broken’ mechanics and using a ‘meta’ loadout to straight-up hacking and cheating.
DDOSing has become an extremely prevalent method of cheating in Apex Legends. The term stands for Distributed Denial of Service and is extremely frustrating for the victim. This type of attack takes advantage of the specific capacity limits that apply to any network resources. As a result, the victim of a DDoS attack gets disconnected from the game’s server and is unable to play.

How does Apex Legends plan to deal with cheaters?
While this can be very annoying in any game mode, it is especially disruptive in the Ranked game mode. Players have been losing their matchmaking rating due to the work of cheaters and via no fault of their own.
Once they noticed the problem, Respawn Entertainment vowed to take “huge steps” in order to curb cheating in Apex Legends. This resulted in some players being banned and Respawn even threatening legal action in some cases. Furthermore, in their recent tweet to combat cheating, Respawn enlisted their three-pronged approach to tackle the problem.
This includes:
- Hiring more people to focus on manual bans
- Wrench Developing more tools to automatically detect and stop DDOS attacks
- Stop sign Investigating ways to more quickly catch and remove cheaters from games

In response to this tweet, members of the Apex Legends community started a hashtag called #SaveApexRanked. The objective of this hashtag is quite self-explanatory, to protect the Apex Ranked mode from cheaters. While Respawn Entertainment seems to be taking steps in the right direction, it will be difficult for them to eliminate all the cheaters from a free-to-play game without taking drastic measures.
