There are not many things in life more fulfilling than building and customizing your house in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The life simulator allows you complete personalization over your island. Your house is one of the most integral parts of the island, thus you should invest in it.

Building your first home in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

At first, you will have a tent as your place of residence. Along with the tent, you will also have the burden of a loan of 5000 Nook Miles. You must pay this off before you move on to the next upgrade. Following this, you will be able to obtain your first house. It will be a 6×6 one-room house with 80 storage slots and a bird’s view.

To proceed to the next house upgrade, you will have to pay off the loan of 98,000 bells. Once the loan is paid, you will unlock the next upgrade. This will increase the space of your house to an 8×8 grid and award you an additional 40 storage slots. However, this house comes with a hefty loan of 198,000 which you must pay off before making any further upgrades.

The next upgrade comes in the form of a back room. It introduces a new 6×6 grid room to your house. In addition to this, it unlocks another 120 storage slots. It comes along with an even more exorbitant loan of 348,000 bells. Once the loan is paid off to Tom Nook, you can unlock the left room. This provides another 6×6 room along with 120 additional storage slots.

Adding the finishing touches to your ideal residence

In order to unlock the right room, you will have to repay the pending loan of 548,000 bells. Aside from another 6×6 room, this room also bestows another 40 storage slots upon you. Players can further add a second floor to their house. It comes in the form of a 10×6 floor and 400 additional storage slots with house sliding customizations.

If you manage to pay the large sum of 1,248,000 bells, you will unlock the last house upgrade. The basement upgrade unlocks a whopping 800 additional storage slots and provides a 10×6 grid basement.

After you have built your ideal house and paid off all outstanding loans, you can customize certain aspects of it. Animal Crossing players can choose from a wide variety of roof, siding, door, and mailbox renovations. These allow you to edit the style and color of the aforementioned structures.
