Only a few months remain till the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, as this widely anticipated Nintendo game, will be available from May 12. There is a lot of excitement about this game, not only among fans but also among the Japanese video game company.

Nintendo appears to have some huge plans for the new fiscal year, which begins around the same time as the upcoming Zelda game hit the shelves. According to recent rumors, the Kyoto-based game company is ramping up production of their six-year-old hybrid Switch devices.

According to Bloomberg, the Japanese manufacturers lowered Switch’s sales forecast in the current fiscal year, with roughly 19 million devices sold by November 2022. The scarcity of semiconductors and components was one of the key reasons for the reduced production rate.

However, Nintendo now believes that it can match the enormous demand for its consoles. They have already alerted their suppliers and assembly partners of the enhanced production. But why do the Japanese behemoths want to expand their output this year?

The answer is simple as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be released this year. Nintendo console sales have always been influenced by the release of their games. Last year, there were fantastic sales for Switch following the release of Splatoon 3.

The Switch sales got even better last year when Nintendo unveiled the Splatoon-themed consoles. When the Zelda game will release, Switch console sales will undoubtedly increase. Also, Zelda-themed consoles would give an extra boost to sales.

What would happen if Switch sales cross the 19 million mark in 2023?

Nintendo sold almost 19 million Switch consoles this year, bringing the total sales for this hybrid console since its debut in 2017 to 114.33 million units. So, if it sells more than 19 million units in 2023, it will be edging closer to the 150 million sales mark.

The 2004-released Nintendo DS has sold more than 154.02 million units. Further, only the Sony PlayStation 2 has sold more than over 155 million units in video game history. It will be fascinating to see if the increased production rate and the release of Tears of the Kingdom can help Switch reach the 150 million mark.
