Alan Wake 2 is the latest installment in Remedy’s epic survival-horror franchise. Fans who were looking forward to its launch, for many years, can now finally explore the world created by Sam Lake. With a current metascore of 89, it’s also one of the best-rated games of 2023. However, many players will be shocked to know that a third installment in the series was almost greenlit more than a decade ago.

Now that’s sounding a little weird in the year 2023, right? Especially, given the fact that the second game has just come out. But it could have been released years ago, while also paving the way for a third game to wrap up the trilogy. Clearly, things played out very differently. Why though?

Before Alan Wake 2, there was a possibility of Alan Wake 3 at Remedy – back in 2010

Sam Lake, the director and visionary behind the horror saga, recently sat down with a media outlet to discuss all things Alan Wake 2. There were many things that he talked about, like the design, the world, new characters and the overall theme. More than anything else, however, his interview also ended up revealing a lesser-known fact about Remedy’s franchise – and also Microsoft.

During 2010, the year when the first Alan Wake came out, Remedy was under the Xbox maker. The title was published with the Microsoft Game Studios banner. Following the huge success of the original, Microsoft was curious to expand it further with more installments. It wanted Sam Lake to have elements from TV shows in Alan Wake 2.

“There were even concepts for Alan Wake 3”, reads a specific section from the interview with GQ. But the plans were later canceled as Microsoft wanted to purchase the entire franchise rights. Remedy wasn’t willing to do so. Instead, it came up with a different title called Quantum Break that didn’t really do well and saw mediocre sales, too. Eventually, the plans for Alan Wake 3 never grew any further beyond the early concepts.

How’s Alan Wake 2 doing post launch?

Alan Wake 2 has gotten off to a great start. According to reports, the developer’s shares have hit a 17-month high following the game’s release. Which means it’s bound to bring glory to the studio on the business front. As far as the sales are concerned, that’s something everyone will get to know by the next week.

This year has already been flooded with some massive game releases like Spider-Man 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Diablo 4 and more.
