Alan Wake 2 is the survival horror game that everyone wanted, but no one expected Remedy Entertainment to be working on it. Then it got announced, and the fact that this announcement came after the success of Remedy’s Control meant fans could expect an excellent visual showcase.

And it is indeed a visual showcase; Alan Wake 2 looks miles ahead of Control in visuals. And the best part is that the developers are bringing a myriad of visual modes to the consoles. Even though they were not planning on it initially.

Alan Wake 2 comes with a performance mode on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

While the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are considered 4K consoles, this means these consoles are capable of running games at a 4K resolution. And this capability has been showcased by a number of developers in their games. Games such as GTA V, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and Borderlands 3 run on these consoles in full 4K. Some developers also give the option to choose between a higher framerate or 4K at 60 or 30 fps.

Remedy Entertainment is doing exactly this with Alan Wake 2. According to a post by the developer’s communications director, Thomas Puha, Alan Wake 2 is going to be released in performance mode on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles. He also mentioned that earlier the developer was focusing on 30 fps instead, but they managed to make it better. He then promised an update with more detailed information.

One thing that is pretty interesting is the fact that they did not mention Xbox Series S in this tweet. Maybe the reason for this is the fact that the Series S is considered a weaker one in the Xbox family of consoles. When Xbox Series X gets a game at 4K, Series S usually gets the same game at 2K resolution.

Maybe that’s why they are not trying to bring a performance mode to Series S. They can try for a 1080/60 fps mode like others do. But we have to wait to see what direction they take with this console.

Yet another link in the growing chain of survival horror games

Many might not see it so clearly, but 2023 is very evidently the year of survival horror games. It started with Dead Space, and then came Resident Evil 4; Outlast Trials followed this year, and we have games like Silent Hill 2 Remake and Alan Wake 2 lined up for the coming months.

It’s an exciting time to be a fan of the survival horror genre, to be honest. Not only are there plenty of these games coming in, but pretty much every one of them has been almost perfect.

Let’s hope this winning streak continues and Alan Wake 2, which releases later this month, also gets a similar critical response.
