Smosh became popular because of its skit comedy. Behind the videos, there was the mind of two people, trying to make each other laugh. In the process, they made millions of people laugh and fall in love with their content. However, an offer came across the duo from Defy Media, one that sought to buy the channel. While this would not take away from who wrote the skits and performed them, it essentially changed ownership and brought more funding in. It allowed creators to expand their production scale.

The issue rose in 2017 when due to creative differences and loss of creative inspiration, Padilla branched out. He created his channel and uploaded videos there. Ian, on the other hand, continued to be a part of Smosh. During this time, Defy Media fell on hard times, and to save the channel, Mythical Entertainment bought it.

The two decided to buy the channel back from its current parent organization Mythical Entertainment after they met a year ago. They realized much had changed since they last worked together. Padilla said, “When we reconnected, we both had done a lot of growing.”

In the video announcing the comeback, the duo said, “So flash forward to last year, Ian and I started hanging out a ton. And we realized that the sketches that we’d made weren’t just great because they were products of the times, I wasn’t just being blinded by the nostalgia when I’d go back to get a laugh at the old videos, they were a reflection of the magic that we felt when we were making something together. So we came up with the totally insane idea of what if we bought Smosh?”

The two did not know if buying Smosh was possible. As a result, they deliberated for a little while, followed by negotiations about the purchase taking place over a few months. The result of this was Smosh is now owned by its original creators.
