PlayStation Showcase 2023 brought back one of the most popular gaming franchises, Assassin’s Creed. The event saw the introduction of the Ubisoft title, with the last installment released back in November 2020. With Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Ubisoft has a chance to go back to its roots and create a game their fans love. Slated for an October 12 release date, it seems Ubisoft is making bold moves in terms of the platforms the game will release on.
Ubisoft has seemingly moved away from traditional game distribution services. Following the reveal trailer of the game dropping during the event, reports emerged stating that the game will not be coming on Steam for sale.
Is Assassin’s Creed Mirage not releasing on Steam?

As soon as the game was revealed, fans took to the web to look for more information about the new title. This included websites that usually function as a means of distributing these games, such as Steam or Epic Games. However, when users looked up the game on Steam, they found nothing.
It seems Ubisoft chose not to release Assassin’s Creed Mirage on the Valve-owned distribution service. Instead, it looks like for PC users, the game will be available through the Epic Games Store or the Ubisoft store.
While there has been no official word about it from Ubisoft, fans have speculated that the decision follows Ubisoft’s longstanding policy of leaving Steam. Steam takes a 30% cut of sales made on its platform. With the hype surrounding Mirage, it means Ubisoft would have had to give up a lot of its revenue.
This is not unusual for Ubisoft to do. During the release of The Division 2, Ubisoft did something similar. Not releasing on Steam saw pre-orders of Ubisoft’s store increase six-fold. Purely from a business perspective, Ubisoft’s decision to not release on Steam makes sense.
A future possibility is never off the table
The lack of a launch on Steam does not mean the game will never come to the platform. At the end of 2022, Ubisoft made a comeback on Steam after four years of absence. Popular titles such as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla were among the top sellers on Steam.

Ubisoft intends to provide a varied distribution service for their games while bringing players together through a singular ecosystem, Ubisoft Connect. This means that while Mirage may not be available on Steam at launch, Ubisoft may bring the game to the platform in the future.
