There was a time when Shigeru Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata were the driving force at Nintendo. Shigeru created characters like Mario and directed games like Super Mario Bros. He then decided he would love his fans to play Peter pan in a game, so he made The Legend of Zelda, and gave protagonist Link Peter Pan’s looks.

Satoru Iwata was Shigeru Miyamoto’s greatest supporter and he remained one till the day he left this world. These two believed in delaying a game if it is not satisfying, they believed in that “better late than never” policy.

And they believed one more thing, the most important thing of them all, games are made for fun, not to tell stories. This theory has affected almost every game that has come from Nintendo over the years. Fans who play Nintendo games play them for gameplay and story is rarely a focus for them.

And now, after years of influencing the development of numerous first-party games, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto has started discussing retirement. And for those wondering what would happen to Nintendo once he leaves, he has an answer.

In his recent interview with NPR, he stated “You know, I really feel like it’s not going to change. It’s probably going to be the same. There’s, you know, people on the executive team, creators within the company, and also people who create Mario, they all have this sense of what it means to be Nintendo. And so it’s not like there’s a lot of different opinions that go back and forth.”
