Xbox Series X and Series S are a pair of consoles that launched together with a very varied set of specs. But one thing that was common amongst these consoles was the super-fast SSD that Microsoft had been advertising ever since the consoles were revealed.

While Xbox Series X came with 1 TB of inbuilt SSD storage, Series S came with 512 GB. Fans complained that this space was not enough to score those huge next-generation games. And Microsoft had a solution ready, but that solution was not as cheap as some might have expected. But it appears a cheaper remedy to that space problem is on the way.

Xbox Series X and Series S might be getting cheaper expansion SSD cards

Seagate-powered SSD expansion cards were the first solution that Microsoft offered owners of its next-gen Xbox consoles. Those cards gave fans an option to upgrade the storage of their console even without opening the device. Just plug them into the given slot at the back of those consoles.

It sounds simple enough, yes, but the problem arose when the price for those expansion cards dropped. 1TB of that SSD cost buyers around $200. Even today, those are available for $189, which is still way too much for an expansion drive. They are charging almost half the price of an Xbox Series X for an expansion card.

But Verge claims that a solution to this problem might be on its way. It appears Western Digital is now working on similar expansion cards for Series X and S consoles. And it is being said that these cards would be priced at a significantly lower price than Seagate ones.

It is being claimed that the price difference between these cards would be somewhat close to $40. This means that if someone were to buy a Seagate expansion card at an introductory price of $219.99, the rumored price for the Western Digital version would be around $179.99.

The real prices of these cards would be announced when these things become a reality, as currently everyone is going by one removed Best Buy listing that introduced these cards for purchase. One thing is for sure, though: with the release of this new variant, the competition would surely force Seagate to charge a more competitive price for their product.
