Nintendo is an innovator. Many have called the company a trailblazer, all thanks to its ability to do something that usually every other company ends up copying. They did this with the Wii; they did something similar with Wii U. And now, the Nintendo Switch has led other platform holders to work on similar devices, such as the PlayStation Portal and the Microsoft cloud gaming handheld.

Similar was Nintendo’s handheld console called the Nintendo 3DS, a console that allowed gamers to see 3D without any need for special glasses. That console was discontinued by Nintendo a while ago, but it looks like some innovators are still not done with it.

Gaming consoles strive for a better display, especially handheld ones. And the display on Nintendo’s 3DS console was fine. This console’s stereoscopic 3D allowed gamers to play 3D games without needing any special glasses. It was enough for many to pick up that console. Of course, later the games took over and 3D novelty washed away. And then players found themselves playing on an okay IPS or LCD display.

One hardware modder decided to change that, and they modded the 3DS console with AMOLED displays. This is not a singular person, though it’s a hardware firm known as Tassei Denki that decided to showcase its work at the Tokyo Game Show. And it is indeed very impressive.

At TGS, they had a display with this message. “Recently, the popularity of mobile devices for gaming has increased, and while there are many similar shapes, in the near future, what shape do you think it will develop into? While imagining what the future holds for playing retro and modern games on the go, this concept was born.”

“Features include a refresh rate of 90 Hz, and you can play the classic Nintendo 3DS on the AMOLED dual screen (6 inches) with 2400 x 1080 pixels and 600 nits brightness. Demonstration of <RED> and <BLUE> where you can enjoy PC games with the powerful Ryzen. It has been prepared for the purpose of this application.”

It’s a tall order that some firm decided to showcase a Nintendo product at a show where Nintendo was present. They literally gave the 3DS a breath of fresh air. Although, this console is in no way endorsed by Nintendo.

Maybe that’s why the company removed its tweet mentioning the console. It’s a tricky thing; maybe Nintendo contacted them regarding the same. No matter what, it would be exciting to see that console make it to the market.
