Hype for the upcoming silver screen adaptation of Nintendo’s iconic franchise, Super Mario Bros. is reaching new peaks. According to a recent report, it is expected that the movie may make well over $200 million only on its opening weekend. Possibly making it one of the biggest movies of the year.

Currently, the biggest opening record of this year is held by Disney/Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which earned a whopping $225 million during its opening weekend in the worldwide market. It is speculated that Super Mario Bros may get well past that. Even with its opening collection, the modern adaptation will be surpassing the 1993 movie.

According to a recent report by DEADLINE, SMB has the potential to become one of the biggest movies of the year. A lot of factors are working toward making the Mario movie a big success. Among them, one of the main factors, according to experts, is the release window of the movie.

The movie will be released during Spring Break in the US. During Good Friday, 80% of the K-12 and Colleges would be on break. Given a big part of the movie’s demographic, Young Adults may have enough time and opportunity to visit the theaters to watch the movie. According to the reports, the movie will be shown in over 4000 theaters in the US/Canada.

While the reviews still haven’t surfaced on Rotten Tomatoes or any other leading platform, the start-studded movie adaptation of a 38-year-old video game icon, featuring names such as Jack Black, Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, is according to many, simply ‘critic-proof.’

Back in 1993, Disney released a live-action adaptation of Super Mario, starring the late Bob Hoskins as Mario, John Leguizamo as Luigi, and Dennis Hopper as King Koopa. If the reports prove correct then the upcoming adaptation by Illumination Studios has the potential of earning six times more than the 93’ counterpart only in its opening week.
