Video gaming has been utterly hyped as 2023’s first Nintendo Direct dropped, unveiling everything gamers were waiting for. From The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom trailer to Metroid Prime Remastered, the presentation successfully set the tone for the rest of 2023. However, a “bad joke” related to Nintnedo Direct led to causing havoc for the officials of the California State University of Fullerton Police.
Nintendo Direct stands as a much-awaited event of the year for gamers. Especially with The Legend of Zelda: TOTK lined up for a release in May 2023, gamers were waiting for a new trailer that they indeed got. But a student’s “bad joke” led to a college campus consulting police help in sheer urgency.
An email regarding Nintendo Direct from an individual took a worrying turn for the recipient

Premiered on February 8, Nintendo Direct was an extravagant event for the video gaming community, to say the least. And understandably, one would not want to miss it for the world. However, a mail led the school authorities to consult police help in wary of a possible act of violence.
As reported by the media organization Kotaku, the California State University of Fullerton Police were “made aware of a perceived vague threat” to the school following one of their professors receiving a mail. Per the police’s statement, the mail referenced a “once-in-a-lifetime event” occurring on February 8, 2023.

Moreover, the mail also suggested the professor “cancel class for the good of humanity.” Such references alerted the authorities who acted on it urgently in light of a possible act of violence. It was further learned that the CSUF detectives were able to investigate the issue. It turned out to be in direct connection with the timings of the Nintendo Direct. Thus, it was concluded that the mail was sent in regard to the presentation.

The sender of the mail, currently believed to be a student, contacted the professor, admitting that it was “a bad joke regarding the Nintendo Direct event.” Kotaku further reported that the additional officers, “Student Community Service Officers and Community Service Specialists,” and the department’s K9 team were on the Campus to ensure safety.
The police authorities voiced that they still don’t know the sender of the mail but regret the events caused by it. The police assured that no threats of violence were happening whatsoever.
