YouTube is the second largest search engine next to Google. People upload more than 100 hours of video per minute to YouTube. That is why a drop in viewership on the platform is a red alert for many creators. As recently a MrBeast fan also calculated his loss if YouTube crashes for the day.

This is not surprising as YouTube is the main source of income for many internet sensations, and they even consider it a job. A loss of viewership means that they might lose their source of income and may even have to face bankruptcy. Although it is not completely true for many since it is just a hypothesis, it surely brings some concern for small-time YouTubers.
There is no competition for MrBeast though!
Recently, a tweet was made by Hank Green, who is popularly known as an American vlogger and science communicator. In his tweet, he asked other YouTubers if they noticed any drop in viewership as the Shorts’ popularity increased?
Replying to this MrBeast commented, “No, I do think the overall competition for long form is getting higher though. If someone isn’t innovating their views will prob hurt”.

After this fans started debating if the fact is true, or not. As many fans also pointed out that MrBeast might not be in danger of it because he is a very influential YouTuber and has more than enough subscribership to maintain his channel. While some debated that the reason why many YouTubers fail is that they don’t bring enough content to the people.
Yeah, but you have the benefit of your insanely large audience. I feel like as a whole, shorts are getting pushed more than long-form content, hurting traditional channels.

Why Viewership is suffering
According to many theorists, YouTube has been seeing a viewership shortage on long-form videos after the arrival of YouTube Shorts. This in turn forced small-time creators to overcome the competition by uploading mostly videos on YouTube Shorts. However, uploading YouTube Shorts had made viewing time for the channel shorter, lowering the viewership of the channel, thus creating a paradox.

Many people also complained about the poor content quality in YouTube Shorts, as they are either abruptly cut or stolen from some other source. New content creators are trying to cope with this since the monetization rules were passed by YouTube in 2018. Thus, they just want their channel to grow by any means possible, making the content quality perhaps lower each day.
As a smaller channel my long form videos only get around 50-100 views and a short I spend little time on generally gets 300-1k views. I know I need to improve but it seems my shorts get pushed out more.
