The Italian Plumber has adorned many hats throughout the years. From his classic side-scrolling platformers to high-octane racers, the Nintendo mascot has seen it all. But series veterans would remember one of the more drastic genre shifts Mario has seen in his lifetime. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is one of the most cherished Nintendo titles to have ever been released.

Ever since it hit the Wii Virtual Console in 2008, fans have longed for a sequel to the classic title. Those loyalists might finally have a reason to get their hopes back up as Chihiro Fujioka, the director of the RPG title, recently announced his desire to make another Super Mario RPG before he retires.

A sequel to the seminal Nintendo title could soon be underway

In a conversation with YouTube channel MinnMax, Fujioka dwelt on the development process of Super Mario RPG, and how he would like a sequel to be his “final” game.

Responding to a query about his willingness to work on another Super Mario RPG iteration, Chihiro said:

“Yeah, I would absolutely love to make one …. Yeah, so in my career, I’ve been involved in a lot of games and I would really like my final one to be another Mario RPG game, if possible…”

Over the years, Chihiro has been involved in several projects under the Nintendo banner. Be it his work on Earthbound, the titular Mario RPG, or his involvement with the Final Fantasy franchise. Additionally, he was involved with the Mario & Luigi titles over at AlphaDream. So if he returned to the Director’s seat for a Super Mario RPG sequel, he would bring some serious pedigree to the title.

It could be an amalgam of his career-spanning works and the greatest Mario RPG sequel fans could hope for. Chihiro was tight-lipped about any story ideas he might have. However, he revealed he wants to focus the sequel entirely on Mario.

“yeah, I would like to go back and create a Mario RPG where you’re only controlling Mario…”

The hype for a sequel isn’t even close to dying down as just last March the game celebrated its 25th anniversary. And with the former director’s ambition to create a sequel to the beloved game, fans might be closer to their dream than ever.
