The Irish jockey, Tom O’Brien showcased his longevity at Worcester by reaching a milestone of completing 1,000 wins. Not only this but he’s the only one to have achieved this feat in the whole of Britain and Ireland.
Tom O’Brien is an Irish jockey who completes in the National Hunting race. The 35-year-old began his career by racing for Shay Slevin wherein he got an opportunity to ride champion horses such as High Chaparral and Rock of Gibraltar. After some time, he decided to move to England in 2004, hoping to ride more horses. In the 2005–06 season, Tom was awarded as the Champion Amateur rider with 32 winners and also achieved the status of being a professional in the same year.

Furthermore, he also won two races at his first professional race meeting. His first major win was at Captain Corelli in the Tommy Whittle Chase at Haydock Park. In 2007 and 2008, O’Brien rode McKelvey in the Grand National, securing the second position to Silver Birch in 2007. At the 2009 Cheltenham Festival, O’Brien rode Silk Affair to a win in the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle. Currently, O’Brien is a routine jockey for Philip Hobbs and Peter Bowen.

A huge achievement for Tom O’Brien
Tom reached a milestone of 1,000 wins on Sunday. He was contesting in the Royal Equestrian Bedding Crushed Pellet Bedding Handicap Chase aboard Ian Williams’ gelding. Post his performance, he was on cloud 9.
Expressing his gratitude to his fans and loved ones, he said, “I’m very grateful for all the support I’ve had since the start of my career. People have shown me a lot of loyalty, from my family to my agent and my boss. Dave Roberts is my agent, Philip Hobbs is my boss and Ashby Underwriting are my sponsor, they’ve all been behind me since I started and have shown me great loyalty – thanks also to all of the other owners and trainers who have put me up along the way. I’ve had my eye on it for a while and it felt like it was never coming, it hasn’t sunk in just yet. It’s definitely a good start, I’m really looking forward to the season ahead.”
