The Golden State Warriors rose to popularity and relevance in the last decade. The key contributors to their success were the core trio of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. All three played a huge role in the championship runs of the Warriors and stayed with the team for the longest, bearing all the highs and lows over the years. However, the Warriors may not be able to keep the aging trio intact any longer.

Klay Thompson’s last season with Stephen Curry and the Warriors?

According to a report from a reliable source, Klay Thompson and the Golden State Warriors did not hold any substantive discussions on his future with the franchise. Thompson, 32, is due for a contract extension. His current contract with the Warriors expires in the off-season of 2024. If the team doesn’t offer him an extension, he will become an unrestricted free agent in 2024.

The Golden State Warriors are no strangers to the luxury tax. The Warriors have paid enormous amounts of luxury tax to keep their roster intact during those championship runs. (A luxury tax is levied upon a team when they breach the designated salary cap). After signing Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins to multi-year contracts worth hundreds of millions, the Warriors are projected to pay $170 Million in luxury tax in the 2023-24 off-season.

Thus, the Warriors virtually cannot retain all their players. That may include aging like veterans Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. Though Thompson and Green played a vital role in the title run last season, the Warriors will have to choose between them and a young core of Poole, Wiggins, and Kuminga if they decide to retain them

Fans react to recent update on Klay Thompson

Following the report, #dubnation fans took to Social Media and expressed mixed emotions on Thompson’s potential exit from the Warriors. Here are some of the fan reactions on Twitter:

The Golden State Warriors drafted Klay Thompson in the 2011 NBA draft. Thompson’s addition to the Warrior’s backcourt alongside All-star guard Stephen Curry formed the deadly duo of the ‘Splash Brothers.’ During their championship runs, Thompson and Curry were among the best shooters in the league. Apart from being an elite shooter, Thompson was also an excellent defender and one of the best two-way players in the league.
