Rafael Nadal won his 16 major at the US open, defeating Kevin Anderson in the process in straight sets. Although pleased with the result, his uncle Toni Nadal, said that it was all too easy for Rafa. Nadal rarely faced a strong challenge during in the entire tournament. ‘For me it’s nothing special [to finish with a victory],’ he said. He also said, ‘I don’t want to say anything bad for our opponents but this time some [got injured] before playing – Murray, Djokovic, Wawrinka, Nishikori, Raonic. And then Federer lose. But I think Rafael has played well and was the best of the people who has played.’
Rafael Nadal had a relatively easier time putting down the likes of Dolgopolov, Rublev and Lajovic. Even in the finals, he defeated Kevin Anderson in straight sets without having to fend off a single break point. “It only got complicated at the end due to nerves while trying to win the match, but the result was clear. This is unbelievable, to win here for the third time. It’s unbelievable because since 2014, he has had problems with his body and so his mind”-said Toni Nadal.
When questioned about Rafa’s ability to equal or surpass Roger’s grand slam tally, Toni Nadal said that Rafa still stands a chance to equal Roger’s count. “I think it will happen. He added, “It’s difficult, but there is some more Roland Garros and I am confident other titles will come”-.
Rafael Nadal heads in to the latter part of the season with a lead of 1960 points over Federer. He will be defending 100 points, as he wraps up the hard court season, with most of the tournaments indoors. It will be interesting to see if Rafa holds on to his lead or relinquishes it to Roger-who thrives on the indoor courts.
