Dustin Poirier has become a bonafide match up for anyone in the lightweight division after reaching the peak of the rankings when he beat Conor McGregor at UFC 257. Khabib might still be the official champion because Dana White refuses to accept his retirement, but for fans and pundits alike, Poirier is the champion. 

He now has the option of choosing between two formidable opponents in Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz. A third fight with Conor McGregor would complete the trilogy, with the score tied at one each. However, Nate Diaz has been gunning for a fight with Poirier for quite some time now.

In an interview with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, he said, “It’s exciting, it’s fun. Those are the fights I want to be a part of, man, fights that are exciting to me, and I am motivated to get up and bust my a** every day, and that’s exciting.” 

‘The Diamond’ elaborated on how Nate Diaz was a guy he grew up watching and is still a big name to this day. Furthermore, he also talked about how the fans would be thrilled with this particular matchup. Poirier acknowledged that it didn’t make sense for the long-term future of the division, but that it was a fun fight and an extremely entertaining one.

Given Diaz’s popularity and Poirier’s stock following his heroics at UFC 257, the fight would provide him a huge windfall for his charity work.

This could be why he is open to forgoing a title shot for a fight that the fans would enjoy. ‘The Diamond has always been a nice guy, and a testament to his goodwill is his charity in Louisiana. Poirier meticulously promotes and operates ‘The Good Fight Foundation.’- a charity devoted to the local community of Louisiana.

Despite being actively involved in the community, Poirier dispelled any questions about his retirement. He further reiterated his love for his family and his work outside of the UFC. While everyone awaits his return, it would be interesting to see who he ends up fighting in the end. However, one thing is sure, no matter who the opponent is, there will be millions of eyeballs on Dustin Poirier.
