The Los Angeles Dodgers are on a roll!- Well, sort of. After starting the 2025 season with a perfect 8-0 record, they’ve now dropped four of their last six games. While it’s not time to hit the panic button just yet, the Dodgers do have a few holes to fill before the trade deadline if they want to reclaim the World Series crown. One position they could target? Second base.
According to Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report, former New York Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres could be the answer. As fans will remember, the Yankees fell short against the Dodgers during last year’s Fall Classic. Now, with Torres having moved on from the Bronx and signed with the Detroit Tigers, the Dodgers could make a move that would add even more spice to an already heated rivalry.
Ever since leaving the Yankees, Torres has been trying to rebuild his value. He posted a moderate 2024 season with 15 home runs, a .257 batting average, a .330 on-base percentage, and a .708 OPS before an injury cut his season short. Now nearing a return, Torres could become a hot commodity on the trade market.

But Miller still sees the Dodgers as favorites, noting, “By no means is it Panic O’Clock for the still overwhelming favorites to win the World Series, but it’s not a bad time to start thinking about where the inevitable trade-deadline buying will be focused.” He points out that second base and center field are areas where the Dodgers could use reinforcements.

Miller highlighted the gap at second base and center field, which needs to be looked at. “The lowest-hanging fruit is arguably whichever of 2B/CF is easier to upgrade, with Tommy Edman becoming fully entrenched as the starter at the other,” Miller wrote. With multiple contenders likely hunting for a center fielder, second base seems like the easier fix for Los Angeles.
The move would allow Tommy Edman to shift to center field to replace Andy Pages, while Torres would slide in at second. However, there’s a catch. Signing Torres could push Hyeseong Kim, their $12.5 million man, into a utility role. Still, given Torres’ experience and upside, the gamble might just be worth it.

Meanwhile, Torres is still working his way back. After signing a one-year, $15 million deal with Detroit, he’s been limited to just two games this season. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch recently said, “We haven’t determined exactly if he’s going to need a rehab stint. He’s doing high-velocity work off a machine,” hinting that Torres could soon come off the 10-day injured list without a minor league assignment.

Detroit Tigers’ Gleyber Torres suffered an injury, which sidelined him on the injured list, playing only two games so far. Torres was signed by the Tigers for a one-year, $15 million contract, and the club will want him to be productive this season. While he is currently working on his hitting, Tigers’ manager A.J. Hinch is hopeful of his returning and said, “We haven’t determined exactly if he’s going to need a rehab stint. He’s doing high-velocity work off a machine.”

Despite playing for years, Gleyber Torres hasn’t been the best, failing to live up to the expectations of the teams he played with. Now, with the way he is practicing his hitting skills, Torres might not need the rehabilitation program anymore. He could soon be discharged from the 10-day injured list as well if he continues to progress the way he is now. He would like to amp up his average defense at the second base position and deliver potentially, which could lead the Detroit Tigers to reach the playoffs, maybe.
